Government officials participated in a tabletop exercise that determined that a massive solar storm could occur in the near future and leave millions of people around the world without necessary utilities, such as electricity and water.
Solar storms occur due to an eruption or explosion on the surface of the sun that sends radiation or electrically charged particles toward Earth. Minor solar storms occur regularly and can interfere with radio signals. Major solar storms only occur every few decades and can release the energy of a billion hydrogen bombs.
